Well done Lanzarote!

I have been holidaying in Lanzarote for over 20 years and during that time the most complimentary thing I can say to the administrators of the island is that the tourist infrastructure and development here has been well planned, fairly restrained and that they deserve a big well done for not falling in to the trap of massive over-commercialization that has beset many other Spanish destinations.

Playa Blanca is a prime example of this, the once sleepy fishing village has developed into a ferry port for the inter-island connection with neighbouring Fuerteventura, a holiday destination with fabulous beaches dotted with quality (mainly 4 & 5 Star) hotels, and in recent years it has added a beautiful yachting marina. Although this may sound like a lot of development the resort’s expansion was not restricted to a small area, it is quite stretched out over a couple of miles from end to end and this is all connected by a lovely, easy to walk promenade.

Now whether this development was by good luck or design I’m not sure but the resort definitely does it for me and the old town around the port still retains the place’s heart and soul, I’m already planning my next visit!
